Coventry University prepare for Varsity with Bears behind them!

Coventry University v University of Warwick

The Place, Westwood Heath Sports grounds 2pm kick off Wednesday 22nd February, Admission Free.

This week Coventry University Rugby League take on the University of Warwick in the annual Varsity match. The Bears have a long association with the CURL as the the club has its roots in university rugby league with many players coming through the ranks and featuring for the Bears since its inception in 1998.

Bears CEO Alan Robinson is proud to be associated with the University club; "I have very fond memories of pulling on the CURL jersey myself as it was my first involvement in rugby league back in 1995. If it wasn't for CURL and the friends I made back then the Bears would never have existed. It is great to see we have kept the link and I think there are better things to come as we develop the sport further in the city with the strong relationship we have"

Coventry Bears prop James Geurtjens has been coaching the CURL this year in preparation for the Varsity match and is looking forward to this Wednesday in particular;

"The boys have really dug deep lately and training has been of a high standard, It has been one of our biggest and strongest packs in recent years and it has been good to see players like Dan Gover a Bears junior and Coventry local come through the system and sign for the Bears in League one. Others such as Kieran Sherratt and University veterans Dan Jones and Dylan Bale have also made a huge impact. I am really looking forward to Wednesdays match versus fierce rivals Warwick"

CURL President Luke Vjestica had this to say about working with the Bears " Working with the Bears and James Geurtjens as a professional player has been great to help us progress in our skills and fitness. The Bears are always supportive and we have carried out coaching workshops to develop some of our players off the field and been involved in part of the Bears community five a side programme Bears 5's. We are hoping to do more volunteering and get a chance to watch the Bears in action this spring and summer term as the more our players immerse themselves in rugby league the better they will become and the stronger our club will be in the future"

Bears fans are encouraged to come and support Coventry University this Wednesday afternoon at Westwood heath sports ground the match kicks off at 2 pm and is free entry.
