Hunslet hold on to top spot as Bears falter in the first half.
Hunslet 44 Coventry Bears 10
South Leeds Stadium, Sunday
Hunslet maintained their position as the only club in League 1 to keep a 100 % record.
This was always going to be a tough game for the Bears, not helped by the postponement of their previous week’s home fixture which rendered them lacking some cohesion and missing some players through injury.
The home side opened the scoring as Josh Tonks crossed over the line after eight minutes and Joe Sanderson added the extra two points with his conversion.
Within minutes of the restart, Nathan Chappell’s try added to the scoreline, as did Sandersons second conversion making it 12-0.
Things looked ominous for the Bears as the eighteenth minute saw them down by 18 points to nil, this point a minute being realised by prop Adam Robinsons try and yet another conversion.
Ben Heaton and Gareth Potts also scored tries and the half time score was 28-0 to the home side.
The Bears had to improve on this performance in the second half, and that is what they did.
Kieran Sherrattpulled the Bears back into the game shortly after the kickoff, and a spell of sustained Bears pressure threatened to further diminish the margin.
However, Hunslet’s Robinson scored again courtesy of Adam Robinson. Ben Heaton added another try to put the home side on forty points, and Hunslets final score came on the 75th minute, as they went into a 44-6 lead.
Coventry still had some fight in them and gained a consolation try at the end thanks to Peterson seizing an opportunity.
The Bears had put up a much better fight in the second half but went home well defeated at 44- 10.
