Hunslet Preview

Last Game of the season

Coventry Bears v Hunslet RLFC

Butts Park Arena, Saturday 22nd September 3pm kickoff

Match Preview

This Saturday the Bears return home after their agonising defeat at Whitehaven last Sunday. This is the final game of an amazing season with highs and lows in equal measure, so let’s hope we finish on a high note with another win against one of the long established Northern teams.

It won’t be just our own supporters wanting us to win as Hunslet lie in seventh place just two points beneath last week’s opponents Whitehaven, and they have a better pointsdifference than the Cumbrians. If Whitehaven lose and Hunslet win, then the Yorkshire outfit could leapfrog them and possibly Oldham [if they also lose] to grab a better playoff place.

So our opponents will be coming down to Coventry with a very clear mission, although as events unfold elsewhere their focus may waver, but certainly as it stands they have it all to play for so we can expect them to be giving it everything from the word go.

Hunslet beat the Bears in Leeds back in June with a 40-16 scoreline, but the Bears went on to improve after that and while not starting as favourites must fancy themselves with a chance especially if their opponents are distracted by results elsewhere.

The game is also the last for Aussie club stalwart James Guertjens before he departs for down-under, so it is only appropriate that we end with his words after last Sunday’s game;

‘heartbroken at the ending today. With all the elements against us, 16 men, 6 hour travel and the whole league writing us off, to go within a whisker of turning Whitehaven over at home shows how far we have come. Can’t wait for my final game on Saturday, confident the boys will do the job’.

Please join us post match for our Awards night and end of season social in the main Sharp End Bar.
