Junior Bears Play Leeds at Headingley!

Coventry Bears Juniors play at Headingley Stadium

Coventry Bears junior section capped off a successful 2023 season with a club trip to Headingley Stadium last Sunday. A contingent of 60 parents and players travelled up to Headingley to watch Leeds Rhinos women’s and men’s teams, with the Bears u10s having the honour of playing two games against North Leeds Leopards on the pitch at halftime in front of 14,000 spectators.  The u10s and u12s also formed the Guard of Honour for Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards and received a shout out from broadcaster Sky Sports just before kick off.

The trip closed out a thoroughly enjoyable season for the Bears’ junior section that ran teams at u10s, u12s and u15s. The Bears regularly had over 100 participants across all three age groups at training on a Wednesday evening from Mid May to the end of July and added 4 new coaches to the thriving junior section.

The Bears approach of focussing on 1. Fun & Engagement; 2. Skills Development; and 3. Retention, has proved hugely popular with players & parents. The focus in coaching is on keeping players constantly engaged in modified games so players learn as they play without realising it and ensuring all players get even game time so all develop to their potential rather than focusing on winning at all costs.

The Bears will round out this season with a presentation afternoon on Sunday 20 August at Barker Butts RFC for all junior age groups. Anyone wishing to join in next season is more than welcome as the club look to offer coaching to more participants and run additional age groups.
